Ionia planners table approval for adult-use marijuana shop

IONIA — At this month’s Ionia Planning Commission hearing, David Bye thanked commissioners for their “hard work” that has helped him and the other owners of ArCanna to meet their goals.

ArCanna is a medical marijuana dispensary and grow and processing facility in Ionia.

“We’re very excited about the job benefits and tax benefits we’re bringing to the city,” said Bye. “We are excited to grow and make a larger footprint in Ionia and the state of Michigan.”

Bye made his remarks during a public hearing held at the Planning Commission meeting Jan. 13 on a request by The Machine Inc., which does business as ArCanna, for site plan and special land use permit approvals for Ionia’s first adult-use retailer establishment proposed for the same location as ArCanna at 29 Beardsley.

However, it turned out the request was premature, and Bye wasn’t happy when the Planning Commission unanimously voted to postpone their decision until next month.

Planning Consultant Jan Johnson told commissioners the newly approved adult-use — also known as recreational marijuana — ordinance didn’t take effect…
